Fire & Safety

Fire Safety is a major consideration in any building. The below is the brake down of a Galileo Connect design.

Fire & Safety

It has been agreed that travel distances from within the data and plant rooms will be measured to the protected corridors. Travel distances to the exits from the data rooms are within 25 m in a single direction and 45 m where two directions are available after fit out.

Travel distances within the plant rooms will also be measured to the exit into a protected corridor or to an exit direct to outside. Generally travel distances in a single direction will be within 9m within a room and 18 m overall, or 35 m within a room and 45 m overall where alternatives are available.

The corridors will be subdivided by fire doors to prevent any smoke that may enter the corridor from affecting more than one final exit.

Exit Capacity

It is expected that the occupancy of the building will generally be up to 50 persons. Exits from rooms will be 750 mm minimum width. Stairs will be 1000 mm width minimum.

Active Fire Safety Systems

Automatic Fire Suppression

The building will be fitted with the following active fire safety measures: -

  • Gas suppression system to protect the data halls and critical plant rooms.
Automatic Fire Detection The building will be provided with an automatic fire detection system, to as close to a L1 provision to BS5839. Structural Fire Resistance Code recommendations for a building of this type provided with suitable fire suppression system is 30 minutes fire resistance to structure. However, due the high standard that Galileo Connect wishes to maintain, the following will be provided with 2 hours fire resistance: -
  • Elements of structure,
  • Walls and floors enclosing the data rooms,
  • Walls enclosing the escape corridors.

Structure enclosing the escape stairs and plant rooms will achieve 60 minutes fire resistance.

Compartmentation

The code recommends a maximum compartment volume of 40000 m3 in a storage building with suitable fire suppression systems. Each compartment in the building will be significantly below the recommended limits.

Facilities for the Fire Brigade

Fire-fighting Access

For buildings over 8000 m2, the code recommends fire brigade access to 50% of the building's perimeter. Each elevation provided for Fire Brigade access will have at least one entry point, with a minimum width of 750 mm.

Fire Hydrants

Fire hydrant outlets will be provided within 60 m of any fire brigade entrance, and not more than 60 m apart.
